Mongolia University: A survey of the university

Inner Mongolia University, located in the capital city of Inner Mongolia,
Huhhot and founded in 1957, is the earliest comprehensive university
ever established in a minority nationality region in China. It now
boasts 4 campuses and covers an area of 1,710 thousand square meters.
It was awarded the national key comprehensive university by the Ministry
of Education of China in 1978 and became one of 100 universities of
the "211 Project" universities for key construction and
development in 1997. It also became the university to be jointly constructed
by the Ministry of Education of China and the People's Government
of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 2004. Its first President was
Mr. Wulanfu, ex-Chairman of the People's Government of Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region and the Vice Premier of the State Council. Prof.
Li Jitong from Peking University, member of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences and a famous biologist, came to teach in Inner Mongolia University
and served as its vice president in its early days. Prof. B. Shorgan,
the present president of the University, is an Academician of the
Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice-Chairman of China Association
for Science and Technology.
At present, Inner Mongolia University has established quite a complete
structure of 9 disciplines, covering such fields as philosophy, economics,
law, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture and management.
Two disciplines, Mongolian studies and life science, with their distinctive
local and ethnic characteristics, enjoy high prestige at home and
abroad. Now the University has established its administrative system
with 3 -level organizations and 2-level management. It consists of
15 colleges, under which there are 34 departments, and 1 independent
department for general education.
Up to February 2006, Inner Mongolia University boasts 2 state-level
and 8 regional-level key disciplines, 1 first-class discipline for
Doctor degree authorization and 19 secondary-class disciplines for
Doctor degree authorization, 92 programs for Master degrees (5 professional
programs), 3 post-doctorate working stations, 59 undergraduate majors,
4 state-level and 2 regional-level bases for basic scientific research
and teaching personnel training, 1 national base for the improvement
of college students' cultural qualities, 1 national key training laboratory
jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education of China and the
People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 1 key college
humanities research base of the Ministry of Education of China, 1
national key laboratory, 1 document and information center for nationality
study of the Ministry of Education of China and 7 regional key laboratories.
The University has 2,545 staff members, including 1,396 full-time
teachers and researchers, among whom are 212 professors, 336 associate
professors. The University boasts 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy
of Engineering, 44 doctorate supervisors, 292 master supervisors.
Those with doctor degrees come up to 137, and those with master degrees
amount to 455. What's more, 72 enjoy Special Governmental Allowance,
35 have been named middle-aged or young experts with outstanding achievements
both at national and regional levels, 3 are the candidates of "Hundred-thousand-ten
thousands Expert Project", and 3 are the candidates of "New
Century Supporting Program for Outstanding Personnel of the Ministry
of Education of China".
Many famous scholars taking the lead in academic fields at home and
abroad work in Inner Mongolia University. They hold very important
positions in the Discipline Assessment Group of the Academic Degrees
Committee under the State Council, the National Higher Education Guiding
Committee on Teaching and international academic associations. Two
professors are awarded the honorary titles of "National Outstanding
Personnel" and "Young Chinese Woman Scientist" respectively,
2 are awarded the prizes of "Great National College Teacher"
and "Young Outstanding Teacher of the Ministry of Education of
China" respectively, 2 are awarded the prizes of "National
Outstanding Teacher" and "National Excellent Teacher with
Exemplary Virtue" respectively, and 4 are awarded the medals
for "National May-1 Model Worker".
Inner Mongolia University enjoys an educational system of various
levels, including the full-time education, the vocational and technical
education, the adult education and the foreign students education,
and has formed education programs of different levels such as doctoral,
postgraduate, undergraduate and higher vocational and technical education
programs, etc. The current number of students of different levels
in the University in 2005 amounts to 20,821, including 2,233 postgraduate
students and 11,796 undergraduate students. In its about 50 years
construction and development, more than 40 thousand graduates have
been fostered. Many of them have become the high-level administrative
personnel in different positions and taken the lead in academic fields,
including 3 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the
Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Attaching equal importance to teaching and research, the University
has been untiringly laying great emphasis on the development of scientific
research activities and creating the discipline superiorities, and
has actively undertaken about 4,000 research programs of various kinds
since its establishment. With the implement of "211 Projects"
construction, the ability to make scientific and technological innovations
has been greatly improved. The University has undertaken more than
1,200 scientific research programs since 1997 and obtained a total
research fund of more than RMB 100 million Yuan. The total number
of prizes awarded for academic research amounts to 366. A series of
scientific research achievements, represented by IVF bovine technology,
have been transformed into the commercial use and made great contribution
to the economic construction and social development.
The construction and development of infrastructure and public service
systems of the university have also been greatly strengthened and
improved. The University now has set up the mate Internet center under
the Chinese Educational and Scientific Research Internet Network in
Inner Mongolia and the first-class mate Internet center under Inner
Mongolia Educational and Scientific Research Internet Network Center.
All its teaching sections, scientific research sections, departments
and offices on the campuses have been connected by its computer network
system and the quality of the work in all respects are greatly improved.
With a large collection of 1.4929 million books, its library is one
of the B-class members of CALIS Center and the main Center of NALIS
of Inner Mongolia Higher Education. The University now has set up
78 classrooms with multi-media facilities and 6 with audio-visual
facilities. Teachers can make full use of all of these modern conditions
created for them to teach and their quality of teaching is also greatly
improved. The University has also opened the key Internet courses
for students and has been encouraging the sharing of the high-quality
teaching resources. The two courses, Mathematical Analysis and Statistical
Thermodynamics, are awarded the prizes of "National Excellent
Courses".
Attaching great importance to international academic exchange and
cooperation, Inner Mongolia University has been actively enhancing
its exchanges and cooperation with international universities and
research institutes at home and abroad. It has officially signed agreements
of inter-collegiate exchange and cooperation with 20 foreign universities
and held 10 international conferences. More than 3,000 foreign scholars
have come to Inner Mongolia University for academic exchanges and
communication. Inner Mongolia University also sends teachers abroad
to pursue advanced studies, to give lectures, to attend international
academic conferences and to conduct cooperative researches. We have
achieved a lot of fruitful achievements.
During the 50 years' construction and development, Inner Mongolia
University has experienced 3 historical stages of development, from
an ordinary university to a national key university, from a basic
construction to one of "211 Project" universities for key
construction and development, and from a provincial university to
a university jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education of China
and the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It
has laid strong and important basis for its future development.
